Check the Chronological Items for more details about HSI.
The Haverly Organization has four related business operations in the United States and Europe specializing in applying Operations Research and mathematical optimization technology for industrial operations and business planning. Specifically, HSI develops optimization, scheduling, simulation, model generation, and application-specific systems and models; consults in all aspects of optimization, scheduling, simulation, and modeling; and provides training in the theory, technique and applications of economic optimization in industry.
In the 1960's, HSI pioneered the development of optimization/modeling software for business and industrial applications, and played a major role in the introduction and implementation of optimization technology in the petroleum refining industry. Since then, through its routine use of optimization technology, this industry has clearly demonstrated increased operation cost-effectiveness, coped with major business and regulatory changes, and saved many billions of dollars, because of the economic optimization of its operations.
Principal application products include a number of generalized LP-based planning systems oriented toward petroleum refining, petrochemical processing, supply, transportation, marketing, pipeline and utility system optimization. These include GRTMPS (Generalized Refining Transportation Marketing Planning System), H/ROSS (Refinery Optimization Scheduling System), H/COSS (Crude Oil Scheduling System), and H/BOSS (Blending Optimization Scheduling System). Other oil-industry systems include the H/CAMS Crude-Oil analysis library and software and the iCDM laboratory assay system. Other services include LP data-base design and development, training courses in linear programming, OMNI and refinery modeling, and custom scientific and commercial software design and programming. The principal modeling language tool is OMNI, a universal LP model and report generating language pioneered and developed by HSI.
Continuity in its ownership and management for over 30 years has led to stability at all levels of our organization, promoted the highest level of expertise, and resulted in the continued patronage and good-will of its many customers. HSI optimization/modeling software is used by petroleum, chemical, pipeline, government agencies, and general industrial companies on all types of modern computers and operating systems. In 1983, President Reagan and United States Department of Commerce awarded HSI the "E Flag" for Excellence in Export.
HSI's planning and scheduling software is used at 100's of locations worldwide. A sample of companies that rely on HSI software includes Amerada Hess, British Petroleum, Caltex, Chevron, Chinese Petroleum, Conoco, Elf, Exxon, Hyundai, J.R. Simplot, Koch, Marathon, Mobil, Nova, Nynas, Petrofina, Petro-Canada, Pertamina, Shell Oil, Sinopec, Statoil, Texaco, Tosco, Total Petroleum, Ultramar, Unocal, Veba Oel, and many others.

HSI completed 36th Profitable Year
At HSI, we have just completed our fiscal year. This year was the 36th consecutive one in which we made a profit. A profitable company means users can count on us to deliver our commitments. We thank all our many loyal friends and clients and hard working, skilled employees because without you we would not have been successful.
We have lost count of the number of times we have reinvented ourselves to keep current and in the forefront of technology. Major changes seem to happen ever five years or so. That is why we maintain a strong Research and Development effort. We couldn't keep bringing you the best if we didn't do this.
Currently we are setting the technology pace in Refinery and Crude Scheduling, in Crude Assay Systems and Libraries, in Refinery Planning, and in the integration of these. We hope and dedicate ourselves so that in the coming year we can serve our existing clients well and add satisfied new ones. (7/1/98)
Staying Current in Operations Research at HSI
Operations Research (OR) is important to our systems and we are active in the OR field. We subscribe to many OR technical journals, attend meetings and have given numerous talks.
Currently we have a new paper submitted for inclusion in an OR publication. In additions we are occasionally invited to referee technical papers submitted by academic writers.
HSI is pleased to be a long term Sponsor of the Journal on Computing (JOC) published by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. JOC focuses on the computation aspects of OR.
We appreciate the importance of Operations Research and Management Science to our field and the value it brings to our planning and scheduling systems. (7/27/98)
Denville player wins "Best Bowler" in Cricket match
This is a news item because Cricket is not widely played in the USA. Nevertheless the township of Denville has an annual challenge match against a New York area Cricket team. David Alexander manages the H/CAMS team at HSI and is known to many of you. He is also a good cricket player and, as part of the Denville team, won a trophy as "Best Bowler". So you cricket players everywhere can know that Cricket (as well as advanced technology) is alive and well in Denville New Jersey, USA. (8/11/98)
People ahead of Processes
At HSI, we consider people more important than processes.
From our long experience in developing practical, sophisticated computer software, we know that this works best. Individuals create new ideas, build quality into our software, and work hard to support and help our clients. Individuals, cooperating voluntarily, achieve the benefits that come from teamwork.
Seeing "people as the key" is why we keep our organizational structure simple and keep our focus on results. That is why our people "own" their projects and receive credit for successes as well as have the responsibility to fix any problems, with support and guidance as needed.
So when you are looking for the best technology and a successful application in planning, scheduling, or crude assay data management; we are here to serve you and help you succeed with our proven software and dedicated people. (11/30/98)
HSI Experts on the Go
This time of year the GRTMPS team is on the go making on-site visits to users. They provide that extra service which helps makes use of our software so effective. They bring the new developments and current system versions directly to the users and deal face-to-face with user questions. While on trips, the team members try to stay in touch but your normal GRTMPS support contact may take longer to get back to you. But someone else usually can help. (10/26/98)
Thanks
As 1998 draws to a close and the last year of the 1900's begins, we want to say thank you to our many clients around the world.
We appreciate your support. You give us many interesting things to do and we pledge to keep working hard and doing our best to meet your needs.
We add an extra thanks to the new clients who have recently commissioned us to deliver refinery scheduling systems in the new year. Thank you for entrusting us with this important work.
1998 has been a year of major accomplishments for HSI. Our web site services were greatly expanded. Strong in R&D
In our fields of Refinery Planning, Scheduling and Crude Assay Data Management, HSI is THE strong R&D company. Our 40 years of success has come, in large part, from a continuing and highly successful R&D effort. We thank the many clients whose suggestions, ideas and encouragement have greatly helped us in achieving the best.
We have a long list of technology that we have pioneered starting with the first commercial optimization solver on the IBM 1401. We pioneered matrix generation and then model management systems - MaGen. We developed the first (and still only) optimizing compiler for model management - OMNI. OMNI was implemented in assembly language on the IBM 360 and currently in assembly language on the PC's for extreme speed and ease of use. It has been expanded to 16 character names for the new century.
We have extended generalized refinery planning - GRTMP - with one system for the full range of use. We pioneered spread sheet connections, data base connections and soon an object oriented approach. Our R&D has established the connectivity of planning, scheduling and crude assay data management in fact as well as theory.
We pioneered a new approach to crude assay data management with integrated, interactive data smoothing and now flash assay updating of older assays. All is implemented in the latest Microsoft Windows.
We pioneered new approaches to Refinery Scheduling to achieve optimal and feasible scheduling automatically. We integrate all aspects of the scheduling process to achieve practical, profitable and easy to use systems for our users.
Our R&D has a solid record of achievement in the engineering and optimization technology and also in the computer science technology to make systems easy and practical. Our software is continually being enhanced.
We would like to be your software supplier for refinery planning, scheduling and crude assay data management. We can provide you the best now. We will provide you the best for the future as we continue with a full and active R&D program.
For HSI, software products are not destinations but journeys into the future. (6/26/1)
